Richard C Winter

Richard C. Winter 89, a resident at the Cedar Crest retirement community in Pompton Plains, NJ for five years before moving to Sunrise of West Essex in 2011, and a former longtime resident of Harding Township, died peacefully in his sleep on September 3, 2016 after a long illness. The son of Kurt and Ruth Richgels Winter, he was raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1949 and Kent College of law in Chicago in 1955. In 1949 he married his beloved wife of 67 years, Barbara Demien of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. After spending six years in the Chicago area, he and his family moved to Morristown, NJ in 1955 where he was employed as a patent attorney at Bell Labs, Murray Hill, NJ and later at AT&T where he served as International Patent Director at the Hopewell, NJ office until his retirement in 1985. After his retirement, he and a colleague formed PCT International which became a successful patent business. He served as President of the Harding Township Board of Education and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of New Vernon where he served as a Elder and Clerk of Session. Dick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughters Christine and her husband, Bob Meyer; Sharon and her husband, Ned Taylor; and his son John and his wife, Ronnie; his grandchildren Jennifer Bestgen and her husband, Brad; Gregory Meyer, Brian and Marissa Taylor; Matthew and Holly Winter; and great-grandchildren Kyle and Brooke Bestgen. Contributions in his memory may be sent to the Cedar Crest Resident Care Fund, 1 Cedar Crest Village Drive, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444, or to the Mental Health Association of Morris County. A private service for the immediate family will be held on September 23rd.
